If this movie were about alcoholism, the hero would regain consciousness after the DTs and order another double. Most gambling movies are dire warnings; this one is a recruiting poster.
I think that's because the movie would rather recycle the " Rocky " genre than end on a sour note. It stars Matt Damon as a New York law student who is a truly gifted poker player, and since the movie ends with a big game you somehow kinda know he's not going to lose it.
Since the genre insists on a victory at the end, the movie has to be in favor of poker; you don't see Rocky deciding to retire because of brain damage.
As a poker movie, it's knowledgeable and entertaining. And as a mediocre player who hits the poker room at the Mirage a couple of times a year and has read a fair share of books about the World Series of Poker, I enjoyed it.
It takes place within the pro poker underground of New York and Atlantic City, where everybody knows the big games and the key players.

From the wonderful, genuine performances of its actors to the clever, snappy dialogue of its script, "Rounders" is well-made all around, and it's so perfectly paced that not once did I find myself checking the time.
The film has its problems, and I'm not a huge fan of the ending, but I greatly enjoyed myself while watching it. Stephen E Super Reviewer.

There may not be a DVD market anymore, but Netflix has shown that it is willing to churn out films about pretty much anything.
Rounders 2 may not be worthy of a cinematic release, but it could easily be made for the streaming service.
Really entertaining flick. John Dahl made one of the nineties best movies in the shape of "The Last Seduction", and as far as noirs go it takes a bit of beating.
Never quite hitting those heights since, his ode to high stakes poker,"Rounders" is the other cult film on his cv.
Poker films have a chequered history in the movies. But for every one of them you have a lackluster straight to dvd bargain bin reject like "Deal" or "All In".

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. The making of this movie is the true definition of the Hollywood dream.
Two lifelong friends, Brian Koppelman and David Levien were at a crossroads in their lives, working jobs they didn't love and trying to make it as writers.
The inspiration for their screenplay was conceived when the writers walked into a poker club for the first time, and two years later they were on set for the first day of filming.
